I’m going to be uploading general information here, starting with the Saracaarn Common Knowledge Handout that was e-mailed to everyone a million years ago.

It is the year 2012, and you are in Saracaarn. It’s a (fictional) coastal city located on the east coast of the North American continent, right on the edge of the Atlantic. It’s busy and bustling and everything you could want for a city. Its most recognizable feature is the big clock tower in the middle of the city, referred to affectionately by the locals as the Ticker.

Saracaarn is an old, old city. Sixty years ago, much of it was obliterated by a massive fire that happened in the middle of the night. Its cause was investigated for well over a year: although many were questioned and some were arrested, nobody got any answers. The event has more or less disappeared in the public consciousness. Most well-travelled areas of the city have since been rebuilt. Some of the poorer districts remain ruined.

The supernatural subculture of the city isn’t any more informed than the general public. Saracaarn proudly supports a well-established Changeling society alongside a Vampire monarchy. The Changeling Summer Court is currently in session, but all four seasons are present, and rotate power along with the standard external seasons.

Here is a very general map of Saracaarn, with well-known regions highlighted.

Saracaarn

The Wall used to be a formidable defence against external bad guys, but over the past couple of centuries has crumbled to a laughable tourist attraction.

The following is a list of the neighbourhoods, with general descriptions and well-known buildings that can be found:

Downtown (the city centre)
It’s downtown. It’s reasonably classy, constantly busy, pretty dirty, and easy to get lost in.
Social venues:
• Studio Blue (nightclub, electronic music, wub wub wub wub)
• Blackbox (nightclub, ‘kink’ factor, popular with the types of vampires that would fit right in on a tv show)
• The Ticker’s Pitcher (bar, touristy)
Shops:
nothing of special note
Other spots:
• Saracaarn Central Library

Weston (artsy district)
Think Art Crawl. Lots of galleries, buskers, theatres, etc. The bridge is a very common target for Art. It gets yarn-bombed and graffiti’d, and there are often sidewalk artists decorating it.
Social venues:
• The Basement (nightclub, hipster-style)
• Tequila Mockingbird (bar/cafe)
Shops:
• The Open Stars (specialty bookstore)
Other spots:
• Saisonale (art gallery run by Jasmine, a politically prominant Spring changeling)

East End (very poor area)
This is not a nice place to be. The slums of Saracaarn. The river reaches a very narrow point, so both shores are equally populated and there is a lot of cross-traffic.
Social venues:
• The Rusty Shunt (bar)
Shops:
• “the hole”, a shop with no sign in the doorway where anything can be traded
Other spots:
nothing of special note

Bags (the financial district, feat. mansions for rich residents)
Think Beverly Hills. Pompous, pretty, more than a little silly.
Social venues:
• Lumière (restaurant, 5-star)
Shops:
nothing of special note
Other spots:
nothing of special note

The Marsh (predominantly changeling population)
Supernatural City. Changelings love it here. It has a reputation as a poor area.
Social venues:
• Prince & Jester (bar; also designated Elysium for vampires and changelings)
Shops:
nothing of special note
Other spots:
• Bridgewater Recreational Centre (rec centre; also the centre for changeling gatherings)

The Big Salt (merchant district, marina)
Lots of street vendors in this area.
Social venues:
• The Foot and Mouth (bar, irish pub style)
Shops:
• Luke’s Attic (oddities/antiques)
Other spots:
• Saracaarn Marina (…it’s a marina.)

The Eth (ethnic district)
Chinatown, Little Italy, all those pockets have their own spot here. There are no specific locations of special note.

Bonetown
This used to be a middle-class residential district, but was so heavily damaged by the fire that it’s now deserted. There are no specific locations of special note.

The Streets
This neighbourhood is the “welcome mat” of Saracaarn. It starts with the primary gates to the city and continues through to downtown. It is the prettiest part of the city, filled with tourist-trap souvenir shops and streetside sculptures.
Social venues:
nothing of special note
Shops:
nothing of special note
Other spots:
• Saracaarn General Hospital (also includes the primary fire station and police station: it is a large complex, built recently to replace the one destroyed in the fire)
